Five flags stand in the snow at the top of the world, and the print's title makes the subject plain: a claim planted on the North Pole itself. The image is a color halftone copyrighted by the Frederick A. Stokes Company, a New York publisher that issued popular books on polar exploration around 1910. Those years were the height of the race to reach the Pole, when Robert Peary's April 1909 claim and Frederick Cook's competing claim of 1908 drew intense public attention. Flags were central to these expeditions, serving as proof of arrival and as statements of national ambition, so a picture built around them captures the drama of that era.
