A team of dogs pulls a sled across the frozen Amur River, with Goldi men (today usually called Nanai) guiding the run. The slide is dated November 1895 and belongs to the William Henry Jackson photographs made for the World's Transportation Commission, which traveled through Siberia and the Russian Far East that year. Before rail lines reached this region, dog teams were a common way to move people and goods over winter ice, so the picture records a working method of travel. The hand coloring was added to a lantern slide, a format used for projected lectures of the period.
