Icebergs drift across the water of an unnamed bay in this c1899 view, with a mountain rising behind them. The picture was made during the Harriman Alaska Expedition, a summer 1899 voyage along the Alaska coast financed by railroad magnate Edward H. Harriman. The expedition carried scientists, artists, and photographers, and Edward S. Curtis, then a young Seattle portrait photographer, was among those who recorded the trip. Views like this one, with ice floating in front of glacier-fed water, document the coastal landscape that the expedition's naturalists were studying at the time.
