Clum, a former Indian agent and newspaper founder in Arizona, was sent north as a Post Office inspector during the rush of prospectors to the Klondike and Alaska's interior in the late 1890s, when mail routes were stretched across remote country. This stereograph, published by the Keystone View Company of Meadville, Pennsylvania, around 1898, was made to be seen through a stereoscope, where two slightly offset photographs merge into a single image with depth. Keystone sold such cards by the thousands, so the card reflects both the public's appetite for images of the Far North and the government's effort to bring postal service to it.
