Two scenes aboard the U.S.A.T. St. Mihiel, a transport that carried the first rural rehabilitation colonists bound for Alaska's Matanuska Valley, are shown here: a family posing together on deck, and a man gazing out through a porthole. The colonists were drawn from northern Minnesota, part of a New Deal effort to resettle farm families on new land after the Depression had left many of them without work. The ship sailed from San Francisco on May 1, 1935, and the pictures suggest the long, uncertain stretch between the families' old lives and the frontier that lay ahead.
