Three views of parents and children in a railroad passenger car set these pictures apart from the usual scenes of the colonists at work. The travelers were among the first rural rehabilitation colonists bound for the Matanuska Valley in Alaska, a New Deal resettlement project that moved families from northern Minnesota to farmland north of Anchorage during the Depression. According to the album notes, the group sailed from San Francisco on May 1, 1935, so these images document the long overland leg of a move that uprooted entire households. The children's faces and the crowded seats convey how much the families were leaving behind.
