A young man in a cap, photographed in May 1935, is one of the colonists documented in an album of the first rural rehabilitation families bound from northern Minnesota to the Matanuska Valley in Alaska. The record notes that the group sailed from San Francisco on May 1, 1935. The Matanuska colony was a New Deal resettlement project meant to give families who had lost their farms or livelihoods during the Depression a chance at new land. Portraits like this one put a face on that effort, showing the individual settlers who left the Midwest for a frontier with harsh winters and unfamiliar soil.
