A father and young child sit on a train in this 1935 view, part of an album documenting some of the first rural rehabilitation colonists to travel from northern Minnesota to the Matanuska Valley in Alaska. The group sailed from San Francisco on May 1, 1935, and the trip west was the first leg of their move. The Matanuska colony was a New Deal resettlement project that aimed to give farm families hit hard by the Depression a fresh start on new land. Scenes like this one capture the long journey, when the settlers were still on their way to a place many had never seen.
