A flag fills the title page of this photo album, which introduces the first group of rural rehabilitation colonists bound for Alaska. The record notes that they sailed from San Francisco on May 1, 1935, on their way from northern Minnesota to the Matanuska Valley. The Matanuska colony was a New Deal effort to resettle farm families who had lost their land and livelihoods during the Great Depression, giving them a fresh start on new land in the territory. A patriotic emblem on the opening page of such an album signals the government sponsorship behind the move and the hopes that came with it.
