Few images from the 1904 Louisiana Purchase Exposition in St. Louis show its Arctic Region exhibit as directly as this stereograph does, with its inhabitants posed in front of the displays. The card was issued by the Whiting View Company of Cincinnati around 1904, as part of its Twentieth Century Series, and it reflects the fair's habit of presenting Indigenous peoples from far-northern regions as living exhibits. Such displays drew large crowds and were part of a wider fashion for ethnographic exhibitions at world's fairs, which often framed their subjects as curiosities. Stereographs like this one, viewed through a special lens, gave armchair visitors a three-dimensional sense of the fairgrounds.
