Yarmouth, on the south shore of Cape Cod in Barnstable County, Massachusetts, around 1900 was a town whose fortunes had shifted from the sea to the land. Sea captains and shipbuilders of earlier generations had given way to farmers, cranberry growers working the bogs, and families who kept small shops along the main roads. The railroad had reached the Cape by the 1850s, linking the villages to Boston and making them easier to reach for summer visitors, whose numbers were slowly growing. Residents would have known Yarmouth as a quiet Cape community, with its churches, harbor, and village centers at the heart of daily life.
