Yarmouth, Massachusetts, in 1893 was a Cape Cod town whose economy still leaned on the sea, with fishing, coasting trade, and salt making along Nantucket Sound and the Bass River. Sea captains and shipmasters had built many of its substantial houses, and by the 1890s some of that wealth was giving way to a new trade in summer visitors. The Cape Cod Railroad, which had reached the town in the 1850s, carried travelers and freight that tied the village to Boston and Providence. Cranberry bogs, a small but steady crop, also drew local workers into the marshes each autumn. Residents in that decade would have known Yarmouth as a quiet harbor community balancing old maritime habits against the first wave of seasonal tourism.
