Cape Cod in the decades around 1900 was a region of small harbor towns that lived by the sea, the bogs, and the woods. Cod, mackerel, and herring were landed from wharves and dories, and salt works, cranberry bogs, and coastal shipping supplied much of the local income. The Cape's towns were tied to Boston and Providence by rail and steamer, while the long fight over a canal across the base of the peninsula, finished in 1914, shows how much residents hoped to shorten that isolation. Summer visitors from the cities were beginning to arrive as well, and many Cape families already measured their year by the fishing season, the bog harvest, and the coming of the boats.
