Cape Cod in the decades around 1900 was a region of small towns that lived by the sea and the land. Cod and mackerel fishing, salt making, and cranberry growing on sandy bog land supported many households, while coastal shipping carried goods between Cape harbors and Boston. The railroad lines that reached the Cape in the 1870s and 1880s brought summer visitors who began to shape a seasonal resort economy alongside the older work of fishing and farming. Many residents still knew the Cape first as a place of shipwrecks, sea captains, and whaling and fishing families, and that memory shaped local civic life and town meetings.
