Truro, on the outer arm of Cape Cod, was a town of fishermen, farmers and cranberry growers in the decades after the Civil War, when most families still drew their living from the sea and the sandy uplands. Its harbor was small, so many men fished from the bay side or worked the coastal schooner trade. The railroad extension to Provincetown in 1873 brought passengers and freight through the Cape's middle towns, and Truro stations linked the outer villages to the wider region. Highland Light, on the bluffs at North Truro, guarded one of the most dangerous stretches of the Atlantic shore, and wrecks along the outer beaches kept the Life-Saving Service crews busy. Residents knew the town for its lighthouse, its shipwrecks and its salt marshes and bogs.
