Yarmouth, on the Nantucket Sound shore of Cape Cod, looked to the sea for much of its living in 1893. Generations of its men had captained coasting schooners and whaling vessels, and many of the substantial houses on its village streets were built from that trade. By the 1890s fishing, salt-marsh haying, and cranberry growing on sandy bogs were carrying more of the local economy, while summer visitors arrived on the Cape Cod Railroad, which had reached the town in 1854. This view shows the community as residents knew it, with church steeples, wharves along the harbor, and roads still following the old colonial layout.
