Here a riveter's hands and a steel beam take center stage, with a bold color woodcut making the warning about careless work hard to miss. It is one of the Work Projects Administration posters, produced under the Federal Art Project during the late 1930s, when the federal government put artists to work designing public messages on everything from health to public safety. Safety campaigns of that era aimed at the hazards of heavy construction and steel work, where a moment of inattention could injure a crew. The poster's stamped date of March 1937 places it in the middle of the program's most active years, and its direct, graphic style reflects the broader push to make public information clear enough to read at a glance.
