A steering wheel and the words "Handle with care" anchor this 1943 silkscreen poster, made under the Missouri arm of the Work Projects Administration's art program. It appeared during the Second World War, when rationing of gasoline and rubber had already limited how much Americans could drive, so the message asked motorists to protect cars and tires that were hard to replace. WPA artists across the country designed posters like this one, which were printed by silkscreen and posted in public places as part of wartime safety and conservation campaigns.
