The caption "Papa's auto" sets the joke on this 1906 poster for *The New Smart Set*, a vaudeville show built around a car when automobiles were still a novelty on American streets. The U.S. Lithograph Co., which printed in Cincinnati and New York, produced many colorful advertising sheets for touring stage productions. The poster is also catalogued under African American performances and portrayals, a reminder that vaudeville of this period often relied on racial caricature for laughs. Its mix of a modern machine and stock comic figures says as much about the audience's assumptions as about the automobile.
