Before he wrote *The Wonderful Wizard of Oz*, L. Frank Baum was a Syracuse, New York, businessman, and this chromolithograph advertises his product, Baum's Castorine, a lubricant for axles and machinery. J.R. Otto printed the label around 1883, and its bright, multicolor design shows how much effort went into catching the eye of buyers in that period. The label predates the automobile by years, so its place on this board reflects the lubricant's later use rather than the car itself. Still, it offers a useful glimpse of the grease that kept wagons and early machines turning.
