Work with care" is a silkscreen poster from 1936, issued under the Federal Art Project, a branch of the Works Progress Administration that employed artists during the Great Depression. Its short slogan packs a safety reminder into a few words, the kind of message aimed at factory and construction crews whose jobs carried real risk of injury in the 1930s. Silkscreen let the Federal Art Project print bold flat colors cheaply in large runs, so posters like this could be pinned up in workplaces, schools and public buildings across the country. The poster is also a useful record of how New Deal agencies used graphic design to speak to ordinary working people.
