The Hotel Schenley stood in Pittsburgh's Oakland district, close to Schenley Park and the growing cluster of universities and cultural institutions there, so it served as a landmark for visitors arriving to the city's educational and cultural center rather than its downtown core. This 8 x 10 inch glass negative dates from about 1905, when the Detroit Publishing Company was producing large-format views of American cities and resorts for sale to travelers and promoters. Its survival through a 1949 gift from the State Historical Society of Colorado shows how such commercial views moved between collections over the decades.
