Hotel Schenley stood in Oakland, on the edge of the Schenley Park land that Mary Schenley had given to the city, and its name came from that family. Opened in the late 1890s, the hotel served visitors to the nearby university and the Carnegie Institute, and it became one of Pittsburgh's grander addresses in the early 1900s. This 8 by 10 inch glass negative comes from the Detroit Publishing Company, which made views of American cities and landmarks for commercial distribution before 1915. The plate reached the Library of Congress as a gift from the State Historical Society of Colorado in 1949, a reminder of how such views traveled far from where they were made.
