The entrance to Highland Park, on the city's East End, shows the gateway to one of Pittsburgh's larger public grounds, which the city developed around the early 1900s as residents moved to the outskirts and sought green space close to home. The image is an 8 by 10 inch glass negative from the Detroit Publishing Company, a firm that photographed American towns and scenery for sale as prints and postcards. Its catalog subjects also list fountains, so the view may take in ornamental features inside the park. The negative reached the Library of Congress as a 1949 gift from the State Historical Society of Colorado.
