The gate at the Allegheny Arsenal entrance anchors this view of the grounds in Pittsburgh's Lawrenceville neighborhood. The arsenal dates to the early 1800s and became a federal munitions site with a grim history, most notably the explosion of July 1862 that killed dozens of workers, many of them young women who filled cartridges. The record notes the site as a Pittsburg Storage & Supply depot, which suggests how the grounds had shifted toward storage and commercial use by the time this glass negative was made, sometime between 1900 and 1915. The Detroit Publishing Company, which produced the image, documented American towns and industrial sites during those years.
