This stereograph shows the Allegheny County Courthouse in Pittsburgh, photographed around 1882. Stereo views like this one were printed as two slightly offset images that produced a three-dimensional effect in a stereoscope, a popular parlor entertainment in the late nineteenth century. The copyright credit to S.V. Albee points to the commercial view trade, which sold such cards to a wide public. The building shown appears to predate the larger Romanesque courthouse designed by Henry Hobson Richardson, whose construction began in 1884, so the card captures a civic landmark on the eve of its replacement.
