Here the viewer looks down on Pittsburgh and Allegheny across the rivers that meet at the city's point, the spot where the Allegheny and Monongahela join to form the Ohio. Bird's-eye views like this were popular in the 1870s, when lithographic printing made large, detailed street-level panoramas affordable for civic pride and commerce. Allegheny City, shown across the water, was then a separate municipality and was not annexed by Pittsburgh until 1907. The print was issued by the Pittsburgh lithographer Otto Krebs, and its color and crowded detail record a city then growing rapidly on its iron, glass and steel industries.
