Few views capture the three communities at once as this long panorama does: Pittsburgh, Allegheny and Birmingham, spread along the rivers that meet at the Point. Otto Krebs, a Pittsburgh publisher, issued the lithograph around 1871, when bird's-eye panoramas were a popular way to show fast-growing industrial cities. Allegheny was then a separate city across the Allegheny River, and Birmingham was a neighboring community on the south bank of the Monongahela, so the sheet records a time when the riverfront was a patchwork of towns. Its wide format, about 49 by 109 centimeters, lets viewers trace the rivers, streets and waterfront that drove the region's growth.
