Charles Graham's wood engraving shows the Bessemer converters at work in Pittsburgh, the steelmaking process that by the 1880s had transformed the region into the center of American iron and steel production. Published in Harper's Weekly on April 10, 1886, across two pages, the scene captures the furnaces and the laborers who worked around them, when molten pig iron was blown with air to burn out impurities. Such illustrations gave readers far from the mills a view of an industry that was reshaping cities along the Monongahela and Allegheny rivers.
