Pittsburgh's steel mills were among the largest industrial sites in the country around 1905, and this stereograph zooms in on the enormous converters at work. Bessemer-style converters were tilting steel vessels in which blasts of air burned impurities out of molten pig iron, turning it into steel in a matter of minutes. The stereo format, with two nearly identical images viewed through a hand-held viewer, was a popular way for early twentieth-century audiences to experience distant industries, and the card gives a sense of the scale that a single flat photograph could not. Pittsburgh's mills drew visitors and photographers alike, making it one of the city's signature subjects in this period.
