Pennell's etching shows the Edgar Thomson Steel Works in Braddock, on the Monongahela River just upstream from Pittsburgh, with a railroad bridge crossing the scene and smoke hanging over the mill. The works opened in 1875 as one of Andrew Carnegie's major steelmaking plants, named for the Pennsylvania Railroad executive who had been his mentor. Pennell, an American printmaker and illustrator, made a series of Pittsburgh industrial views around 1908 and 1909, when the city's smoke and furnaces were drawing national attention. The print is worth noticing for how it turns heavy industry into a study of light, air, and structure.
