Carnegie Steel Company works rose along the rivers that frame Pittsburgh, and this view places the industry at the center of the city's identity. The Detroit Publishing Company, which produced many color and black-and-white views of American cities and landscapes in the early 1900s, made the picture. Pittsburgh in that era was among the country's leading centers of iron and steel, and the smoke, mills and rail lines it shows speak to how much of the city's economy and daily life revolved around the furnaces. Andrew Carnegie's firm, later absorbed into United States Steel in 1901, became a symbol of that industrial growth.
