Rendered in color gouache or tempera rather than photographed, this drawing shows steel workers at their labor, a subject that drew many artists in the 1910s and 1920s. The title was supplied by Library staff, and the maker, identified only as W.R., is not recorded. Around 1920, the mills of Pittsburgh and the surrounding valley were among the busiest in the country, running day and night and employing large crews in heat, noise and smoke.
