This 1935 Pittsburgh view is built around a steelworker's son, a young African American child whose father worked in the city's mills. Those mills shaped daily life along the rivers, and by the mid-1930s the Depression had hit the steel district hard. Many Black families there had arrived during the Great Migration, drawn by mill work that was often the hardest and lowest paid. Gelatin silver prints like this one were the standard medium for documentary photography of the period, so the picture keeps a personal, domestic side of an industrial city that is usually seen only through smokestacks.
