The statue in this view honors Alexander von Humboldt, the German naturalist and explorer whose writings on South America, climate, and the natural world made him one of the most celebrated scientists of the nineteenth century. Monuments to him appeared in several American cities, many of them tied to the large German-American communities that admired his work. The image comes from the Detroit Publishing Company, which between about 1900 and 1910 produced large numbers of city and landscape views for travel books and souvenir cards. Its glass negative captures the sculpture set within the park, offering a record of how Pittsburgh presented its public monuments at the turn of the century.
