Memorial Hall of Allegheny County stands at the center of this view, its classical bulk rising above the open fields and farm plots of Schenley Park. Mary Schenley gave the land to the city in 1889, and the hall, dedicated in 1910 to honor Civil War veterans, later anchored the edge of the Oakland district. The Detroit Publishing Company, which issued many views of American cities in the early 1900s, made the glass-plate negative, and the scene shows how much of the park's outer ground still looked rural before the surrounding neighborhoods filled in.
