The image shows the Allegheny Observatory, which sat on a hill in Riverview Park on Pittsburgh's North Side, where its domed building and grounds stood above the city and the rivers below. The observatory grew out of the Western University of Pennsylvania and was one of the more important scientific institutions in the region, known for its astronomical work and its large telescopes. The Detroit Publishing Company, which produced American views for sale to tourists and collectors in the late 1800s and early 1900s, made this 8 by 10 inch glass negative, so the picture records how a civic landmark was documented during the era of the company's commercial travel photography.
