Few Civil War memorials in the country sit in a setting quite like this one, a large stone hall in Pittsburgh's Oakland section built to honor the county's soldiers and sailors. The Soldiers' and Sailors' Memorial Hall was dedicated in 1910, and this glass-plate negative dates from the years just after, when the building was new and the surrounding streets were still taking shape. The Detroit Publishing Company, which sent photographers across the country to document cities, towns and landmarks, made the view as part of that wider survey of American places. It shows how civic monuments were presented to the public in the early twentieth century.
