Fifth Avenue in Pittsburgh, seen looking west from Smithfield Street, is the subject of this stereograph, a paired-image card meant to be viewed through a hand-held stereoscope so the street seems to rise up in three dimensions. Underwood & Underwood, the firm named on the card, sold large numbers of these views in the early 1900s, and their street scenes give a sense of the downtown traffic, streetcars, and commercial buildings of the period. The record dates the card to about 1903, though that date comes from the caption card and has not been independently verified.
