A steamboat bearing the name "Ohio" lies at the levee beneath the Smithfield Street Bridge, which crosses the Monongahela River just above its junction with the Allegheny. The view comes from the Detroit Publishing Company, a firm known for large-format views of American towns and waterways made around 1900. Pittsburgh's riverfront was then a busy working waterfront, where steamboats, barges and freight moved the output of its mills and factories. The glass negative, with a crack running down its right edge, preserves that river traffic as it stood in the early twentieth century.
