Wood Street, a busy commercial thoroughfare in downtown Pittsburgh, is the subject here, with the Farmer's Bank standing on its block. The Detroit Publishing Company, which photographed American cities, towns and landscapes in the years before 1915, produced views like this one as picture postcards and bound souvenir albums. Made on an 8 x 10 inch glass dry plate, the negative records the storefronts and street life typical of an industrial city's commercial core at the turn of the twentieth century. Pittsburgh's steel and rail economy made its downtown banks and streets places of constant activity, so the view offers a useful glimpse of that working city.
