Smithfield Street, looking northeast toward a post office on the right, anchors this stereograph of downtown Pittsburgh. Its title calls the city a "nursery of vast fortunes," a nod to the steel, glass, and coal money that made Pittsburgh one of the country's richest industrial centers in the early 1900s. Underwood & Underwood of New York produced such cards by the hundreds for stereoscope viewers, which were popular in parlors and schools. Read as a street scene, the card shows the crowded, busy commercial core of a city then at its industrial peak.
