Smithfield Street, photographed looking northeast with the post office at right, shows one of the main downtown thoroughfares of Pittsburgh in the early 1900s. The card's title, "nursery of vast fortunes," reflects the city's reputation at the time, when steel, coal, glass and banking had made it one of the wealthiest industrial centers in the country. Underwood & Underwood issued the view as a stereograph, meant to be seen in three dimensions through a hand stereoscope, a popular home entertainment of the period. The street's crowded blocks and commercial buildings capture the look of a busy American city before the automobile reshaped its traffic.
