Fifth Avenue in Pittsburgh, seen looking west from Smithfield Street, is the subject of this stereograph, a paired image meant to be viewed through a stereoscope for a three-dimensional effect. Dating to about 1903, the card was issued by Underwood & Underwood, a firm that produced and sold large numbers of stereo views of American streets, landmarks and scenic places in the early twentieth century. Downtown Pittsburgh at that time was a dense center of steel, rail and commerce, so the street scene offers a glimpse of its busy urban core. The catalog notes that the date and caption come from an older card and are not fully verified.
