Sixth Avenue in downtown Pittsburgh is the subject of this view, made around 1908 on an 8 x 10 inch glass dry plate negative. Pittsburgh was then one of the country's great steel and rail centers, and its downtown streets carried heavy traffic of streetcars, delivery wagons and pedestrians alongside commercial blocks. The negative comes from the Detroit Publishing Company, whose photographers traveled widely to document American cities and landscapes for issue as postcards and books, and the plate reached the Library of Congress through a 1949 gift from the State Historical Society of Colorado.
