Circus posters pasted across the front of the Hotel Lincoln set this Pittsburgh street view apart from the company's many other city scenes. The 8 by 10 inch glass negative was made between about 1900 and 1905, a period when Pittsburgh's steel and rail industries made it one of the busiest cities in the country and street-level advertising was common on commercial buildings. The Detroit Publishing Company produced large numbers of views like this for sale to travelers and publishers, and its surviving negatives give a close look at everyday downtown life at the turn of the century.
