Few views from this period pair a cluster of tall office buildings with the waterfront quite like this one, which the record places between about 1900 and 1910. Pittsburgh sat where the Allegheny and Monongahela rivers meet to form the Ohio, and its downtown grew fast on the wealth of steel, coal, and rail. The Detroit Publishing Company, which made this 8 x 10 inch glass plate negative, sold views of American cities to a broad public, so the picture also records how a booming industrial city wanted to be seen.
