Margaret Morrison Carnegie College, the women's college of Carnegie Institute of Technology in Pittsburgh, is the subject of this 8 x 10 inch glass dry plate negative, one of the many views the Detroit Publishing Company made of American cities in the years around 1900. The company's photographers worked for its promotional and postcard trade, and its images were often hand-tinted and sold as lithographs to a public eager to see the nation's growing towns and institutions. Margaret Morrison, opened in 1907 as a practical training school for women, was named for the mother of Andrew Carnegie, and the building's presence signals how higher education for women was expanding in the early twentieth century.
