Few views of Pittsburgh are as striking as this one of the iron mills at night, recorded on an 8 by 10 inch glass negative. Pittsburgh was the center of American iron and steel making, and its mills ran around the clock, so furnace glow and lit work areas produced sharp contrasts of light and shadow. Night exposures on large glass plates required patience and long timing, which makes the image a useful record of early industrial photography. The Detroit Publishing Company, which issued views of cities and industry across the country around the turn of the century, produced many scenes like this one.
