The U.S. Arsenal, the federal munitions complex on the Allegheny River, set this view apart from the city's better-known skyline scenes. Established in the early 19th century, the arsenal stored and produced arms and ammunition, and during the Civil War it was one of the most important ordnance centers in the North. Its workers handled volatile materials every day, and a deadly explosion at the site in 1862 shows the risks of that work. The picture helps show how a working military installation shaped the riverfront and the neighborhoods around it.
